A Glimpse into the Past

The Writer’s Building, a magnificent colonial-era structure, is located in the heart of Kolkata’s bustling Dalhousie Square, now renamed B.B.D. Bagh (Benoy, Badal, and Dinesh Bagh). Built-in 1777 by the British East India Company, this architectural marvel served as the office of the writers of the British East India Company, who were responsible for administrative tasks such as record-keeping and correspondence. Thomas Lyon was selected to construct it and the building was completed in 1780.

It underwent many changes over the next few years, which included housing Fort William College (meant to impart language skills in Hindi and Persian to name a few). Present-day Writers Building has 13 blocks and is the secretariat building of the West Bengal State Government. Till 2013 the building was also used as the office of state Chief Minister and other ministers. In 2013 the Chief minister’s office was shifted from here to ‘Nabanna’ in Howrah.

Architectural Marvel

The Writer’s Building is a fine example of the neoclassical architectural style, characterized by its imposing columns, ornate Corinthian capitals, and a grand façade that exudes an air of authority. The building’s distinctive red colour, adorned with white architectural details, adds to its charm and makes it stand out amidst the modern structures of Calcutta. A walk around the perimeter of the building will reveal intricate sculptures and reliefs that showcase the artistry of the time. Four groups or clusters of statues adorn the terrace of Writers Building, each symbolizing ‘Justice’, ‘Commerce’, ‘Science’ and ‘Agriculture’ and represented by the Greek Gods and Goddesses of these streams – Zeus, Hermes, Athena and Demeter respectively.

Historic Place

While the Writer’s Building originally served as a government office, it soon became associated with literary and political activities. Over the years, it witnessed several historic moments that shaped India’s struggle for independence. Many prominent figures of the Indian freedom movement, including Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose, had connections with this building.

This monument is witness to the famous assassination of the notorious Inspector General of Prisons, Lt.Col.N.S.Simpson, who was shot by the trio Benoy Basu, Badal Gupta and Dinesh Gupta, having gained entry to the building dressed as Englishmen. These three brave freedom fighters were commemorated by having the chief business district of Kolkata named after them – B.B.D.Bagh.
